Susan Bickford

Susan Bickford is principal artist and owner of Susan Bickford Singing Walls, located in Nashville, Tennessee. Bickford began her art quest at an early age. Her grade school teachers complained to her parents that the papers she turned in were much more about the "illustrations" than the subject. That love of enhancing any and all things with decorative flair has never let up. Bickford began formal studies in art at the age of 12, continuing her education through high school and college. She attended Austin Peay State University pursuing a degree in Fine Arts; however, her dream of making a living in the art field took a detour into the world of government and politics, followed by a 20 year career in Public Affairs as a corporate lobbyist.
Although her dream of a career in decorative arts was put on hold, she never stopped in her endless quest to enhance her environment through the use of decorative art. Bickford started refinishing and painting furniture in the mid-70s, adding walls to her repertoire in the early 80s. Along the way, she graduated Magna Cum Laude from T.S.U. with a B.B.A. in Finance and Economics. In 1999, Bickford finally had the opportunity to pursue her dream of building a decorative arts business after leaving behind the corporate life.
Bickford believes that her education in the decorative arts is an ongoing process and continues her studies on an annual basis with master artisans across the country, including Master Faux Artisan Martin Alan Hirsch of Decorative Finishes Studio's Faux Finish School and Melanie Royals of Royal Design Studio.
Bickford attended the 2004 Fauxcademy and brought home the Level II Platinum Trophy Award for Best Venetian Plaster, Veneziano, or Marmorino Decorative Finish Project. Most recently, Bickford provided wall and ceiling finishes in the custom home that garnered four top awards during the 2005 competition for the prestigious Aurora Award. The Aurora Award recognizes design excellence in new home construction in a 12-state region from Texas to Virginia. The custom home won the Grand Aurora Award 2005, Award for Kitchen Design, Best in State for Tennessee, and Custom Home One of a Kind Award.
